An update on life, the Universe, and Everything

I do all my (meager) writing on my main site: AccordingToWhim so this fun personal blog gets neglected. Here is a update from me on life. A bit of a what’s been going on in your life over the last several years.

I worked at a hospital in Wise County, Texas just shy of 18 years. The county sold the hospital to a mega hospital chain and they laid off about a 1/3 of the department (and a whole lot more of the rest of the hospital staff). I was laid off after we had spent 3 months getting all the old system setup for the new owners. This was at the beginning of 2024. I have a lot of undealt trauma about that but lets move on…

I began searching for a new jobs several months before this (smelling the coming change in the air) and failed to find anything before the dreaded lay off. Once it happened I picked up my searching and could not find an equivalent job in my hunt (at least not being hired by one). I settled for a job which pays about 20k less. Man oh man it is rough to drop down in salary that much.

I AM thankful I found something but the gloom that hangs over me about what could have been is permanent. I was in management and I had great bosses. It was a very relaxed environment and we all worked well together. We had freedom and little rules. I am now in a job with lots of rules and no longer being in management I have almost none of that freedom and it is a shock to the system.

Even after getting the new job I kept look (and keep looking) for jobs elsewhere. I have had many interviews and have been turned down many times. Its not that my current job is like prison, but I am doing the kind of work I left 10+ years ago and I find ZERO interest in it. When you have ZERO interest in your job… that makes 40 hours a week CRAWL.

I really want to be managing people, being apart of a business disruption for improvement’s sake, and making big differences and impressions for a business. I get none of that here.

What’s your takeaway from this? I’d wish I’d made more professional connections at my job. I think when it comes to getting a new job, it’s what you know, what who you know. I have have 20 years of IT experience, 3 degrees and 8 well-respected certifications but no one is interested…
